Queenie, The Spirit of a Dancer, 2010
This educational short film by filmmaker, Ann Marie N. Kirk, features hula elder, Queenie Ventura Dowsett. She spoke with Hula Master Nona Beamer about her hula journey, her mentors, and her love of hula. The interview footage comes from the Hula Preservation Society Oral History Library which was officially launched in 2000 with this interview which lasted two days! The two enjoyed talking story and getting to know one another at Auntie Queenie's homestead at the foot of Mauna Kea in Waimea on Hawaiʻi Island. These inerviews along with Auntie Queenie's other oral history sessions can be fond on her main collection page. Also making an appearance in the piece is Uncle George Naope who accompanies Auntie Queenie as she shares a hula at this public program presented by HPS in 2003. It was part of the monthly "Twilight at Kalāhuipuaʻa" series. Auntie Nona Beamer joined her fellow hula elders for this special gathering.
